We decided to try here rather than drive to our usual store figuring that even if they were a tad more expensive we would be saving on gas and time. The sign at the front door should have been a warning as it stated they were a union shop. What does that have to do with anything? Are we supposed to conclude that we should shop there to support union workers? Is it somehow supposed to justify steep pricing? After checking out prices on a few items we needed we quickly realized that a 15 minute drive to our usual grocery store was well worth it. Safeway's best price for a 24 pack of bottled water was over $6 vs $2, with pineapples over $5 Vs $1.47 at our usual haunt. The Safeway was clean and their produce was artfully displayed. The store is large enough that your should be able to find most of what you need yet small enough that you wont get exhausted going from one end of the store to the other. The quality of what your are buying is no different than where we usually go, so it really depends on what one is willing to pay for. If you don't have a car and live close by and like the atmosphere there then it makes perfect sense and for that they deserve a few stars, but if you need to keep within a reasonable food budget there are far better options.

This store opens at 8 am. A fairly large lineup had formed at 7:50 am the morning I was there. Very strange that a grocery in the inner city of a big Canadian city opens so late. Staff were nice, though, probably because they get enough sleep.

The location is good - but the store has little variety - its just the basics here. Also... the prices on meat are incredibly inconsistent - one day the 12 + package of chicken drumsticks will be priced regular at $7. Then next week youll go to buy the same thing and it will be $15 (And only good until the next day!) - I expect much goes to waste from this.. We've also noticed that there is no one updating prices when food is about to go bad... it often stays the same.

It's a fairly small location, so there is not enough selection. Otherwise it's a fine store, that's usually not overly busy. I go regularly to the Pharmacy here, and the most I usually have to wait is the standard 15 minutes.

Our nickname for this Safeway is "the worst Safeway in Calgary" and I almost guarantee that's a fact. The store hasn't been renovated since the 80's and even post 2013 flood it still managed to not look newish.Pros: the location and the ability to see those super old half semi circle checkout turntables rather than a conveyor belt. Non ironically I actually took a picture of one as I haven't seen one working since the 80s.Cons: literally everything else. The staff are all grumpy and the security is intensive. The selection of food is incredibly poor (no low sodium chicken stock was one random miss I had last week) and prices are 30% - 50% higher than "normal" Safeway stores let alone Superstore/Walmarts. Safeway should really come down on this franchisee/owner as it's really bad for the brand to have a store lag by 30 years other stores in the city. I only go here to pick up something I forgot or need on my way home from work. Would avoid completely if I didn't need to grab small items. Location gives an extra star but store is awful.
